biography

Dr. Ferrandiz was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and earned his medical degree at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. His interest in rheumatology began early, inspired by his father, who is a Rheumatologist, and his grandfather who was an epidemiologist - both of whom shaped his passion for medicine, research, and service. He completed his internal medicine residency at North Alabama Medical Center, where he served as chief resident. During residency, he engaged in research on axial spondyloarthritis and volunteered at a free clinic serving the local Hispanic community. These experiences deepened his commitment to improving access to rheumatologic care, advancing health equity, and developing tools for a better healthcare delivery.

Why Rheumatology?

"Rheumatology blends complex problem-solving with continuity of care and the chance to build deep, meaningful relationships with patients. I was drawn to its diagnostic challenges and the rewarding opportunity to improve quality of life for patients with chronic autoimmune conditions. My experiences with mentors like Dr. Luis Espinoza, Dr. Graciela Alarcón and Dr. Jean Liew inspired me to pursue a career in this field. I also enjoy procedures and teaching, both of which are integral to the specialty."

Why UW?

"The University of Washington stood out to me for its commitment to excellence in clinical care, research, and equity. I was especially impressed by the faculty’s dedication to mentoring and their leadership in addressing health disparities. The opportunity to train in a dynamic academic setting that also serves diverse patient populations across the WWAMI region aligns perfectly with my goals. I’m excited to be part of a program that values innovation, collaboration, and inclusion. Go Huskies!"
