biography

Dr. Ritter was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana. He went to the University of Notre Dame and graduated as a chemical engineer but later decided to pursue a career in medicine. He attended Emory University School of Medicine and was commissioned as an active-duty medical officer in the US Navy upon graduation. He finished his intern year at Naval Medical Center San Diego, CA, before completing residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA. He subsequently served as a general internist at Naval Hospital Bremerton, WA, before completing his time in the Navy and pursuing training in rheumatology. His interests in rheumatology center around healthcare disparities in the rural and veteran populations and quality improvement.

When he has free time, he likes to hike, kayak, cycle, ski, go on day trips exploring his adopted home of Washington, and spend time doing whatever activities his wife and kids find joy in.

Why Rheumatology?

"With a background in primary care, I value longitudinal relationships with patients and working with them to improve their quality of life. Rheumatology allows me to help navigate complex illnesses in a constantly evolving and interesting field while maintaining the long-term relationships that make being a physician rewarding."

Why UW?

"Over the last 4 years, my family and I have begun to view Washington as our adopted home. Right from the start of the interview day at UW, I felt welcomed into a warm, collegial environment that collectively is working to improve the community in which we live. I am thrilled to be able to continue to grow in this community that has embraced and been so welcoming to my family and hope to be able to give back however I can."
