The UW Division of Rheumatology is committed to helping people with rheumatic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus by providing direct care to patients; by conducting research to better understand the reasons for these diseases and to find new, better treatments; and by training new rheumatologists and scientists to be leaders in their field.

Lucile Evelyn Townsend Henderson
Ms. Henderson developed an interest in rheumatology (her sister contracted rheumatoid arthritis and died at a young age) and made many gifts to the University of Washington Division of Rheumatology throughout her life.

Dr. James J. Lane, Jr. was the first fellowship trainee in the University of Washington Medicine Division of Rheumatology who went on to become a highly respected Rheumatologist serving the people of Seattle and Western Washington throughout his career.

The Maury Family
Jerry and Esther established the Herndon (Jerry) and Esther Maury Professorship in Rheumatoid Arthritis at UW Medicine in 2005 with a gift made through their estate. This endowed faculty position provides a permanent source of funds that will enable UW Medicine to recruit and retain doctors and scientists researching new treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis, a disease that has touched their family.

Leap for Lupus
Leap for Lupus has given over $175,000 and have supported the research of many postdocs and junior faculty. Their gifts will continue to support young investigators who are working to find a cure for lupus.

The Karr Family
The Karr Family Endowment was established by a generous gift from Janet M. and Reynold (Rennie) Karr. With their gift, the Karrs will support the ongoing training of fellows in rheumatology to become proficient in the care of patients with rheumatologic diseases, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and spondylarthritis.

Robert and Betty Snead
The family of Patricia A. and John W. Judy recently created the Robert F. and Betty Snead Fund for Innovation in Lupus Research. This fund supports innovative new research projects that help us better understand lupus and, one day, help us create better treatments for it.
